Blues Moon Radio playlist Dec. 6, 2011 - Tribute to Hubert Sumlin

Welcome to this week's Blues Moon Radio show... for those of you who have come to this page for the first time, we are pleased to meet you. The Blues Moon has been on WUSC-FM (and streaming via the Web) since 1990. We hope you will "LIKE" and "favorite" this page, as well as bookmark www.bluesmoonradio.blogspot.com.

The weekly show airs at 6 p.m. (-5GMT) and "Tuesday is Bluesday." Your host, Clair Delune - and her intrepid inspiration/co-host, RockyDawg, Blues Defender are happy to have you tune in via the Web at http://wusc.sc.edu, the University of South Carolina's award-winning college station. You may also stream the show via ITunes at radio/college and university/WUSC-FM.

Ms. DeLune is a writer, historian, artist, counselor, university administrator and public relations practitioner who has taught upper level music appreciation courses at the Unversity of South Carolina, including Blues History, Rock and Roll History, Jump/Swing/Boogie-Woogie, and Women in Popular Music of the 20th Century. She has contributed numerous articles and chapters to numerous books and periodicals and endeavors to make the show historical, informative, empathic and entertaining. In her spare time, she trains horses and works to help rescue animals who are abandoned or abused.

Tonight's show will be the last Blues Moon Radio Show of the year. We'll rejoin your lives (already in progress) in mid-January - please stay tuned to the blog and FB page for a specific date).

We mourn the loss of so many of our elder statesmen of the Blues this year... most recently a fine fellow named Hubert Sumlin, who got his start with Howlin' Wolf, then got a "better offer" from Muddy Waters... only to ask Wolf to take him back a year later, which he did. Sumlin shared with me that he used to crawl into the gigs through the bathrooom windows of venues because he was too young to get in; and looked too young to be snuck in even as a member of the band. Sumlin was always smiling, every time we met, and always had an upbeat and positive attitude. He has played with the greats, and he turned around and shared his knowledge with the up-and-coming Blues greats through the past three decades.

He had just passed his landmark 80th birthday on Nov. 16th... but was reportedly too ill to play and passed away, in his sleep, Sunday morning, Dec. 4th in the wee wee hours.

He will be missed terribly by so many, me among them. I hope his friends, colleagues, loved ones and those who knew him better than I, will find comfort in how well he was loved and admired by so many across the globe.

And Blues Heaven expands to fit in another landmark great man in the best Blues band ever assembled.

We will pay tribute to Hubert Sumlin, one of the Bluesmen I most admired, at the top of the first hour. Then we'll move to some of the nominees for Best of 2011 - and you all are welcomed to comment on this page to vote for your faves... you can vote for multiple people - there are 20 slots for "Best of 2011"... so if you'd like to submit a rating for your top three or five, that will work fine!

Then, we'll finish out with more Christmas Blues - including the amazing Clifford Curry with his new holiday single... and I'm hoping we will have time for Big Boy Pete and Hilton Valentine's Merry Skifflemas! That might just cheer us up a bit after this sad week.

Wishing you all a very happy holiday season and wonderful, prosperous and healthy new year. As always, thank YOU for tuning in... we appreciate YOU!

Blues Moon News and Views... Jams, concerts, updates

Thanks so much to Shelley and Ace of The Delta Swagger for capping off a wonderful Women's History month project - filled with so much insight about the differences for women in music in today's touring world. Vive la difference! Their new CD is smokin'.

I especially want to thank Shirley King, "The Daughter of the Blues" for her warm and wonderful insights on that topic as well. The aspect of being a legacy, as the daughter of foremost living Bluesman B.B. King, comes with the common perception that she has had her musical career wrapped up with a bow and given to her, ready made. Shirley's father worked for his success and he sounds like my Dad... who wanted me to work for mine. B.B. wanted his daughter to work for hers - providing guiding hands and heart, but Shirley's career success is her own! We are proud to know her and are looking forward to her new CD this year. http://www.answers.com/topic/shirley-king

I had a great time emceeing the very successful and professionally run Sparkle City Blues Jam at New Decades in Spartanburg, S.C. last Wednesday. Was impressed with the club, the amazing array of females who arrived to sing: Chocolate Thunder, Jean Calvert (see her great bios from her guest host stint earlier this month on Blues Moon Radio), Wanda Johnson, Shontell Babb and Fayssoux Starling McLean were in the house!  The menfolk did a great job of rockin that Blues house, too! Special thanks to Ms. She D'Ambrosio, who invited me to host the last week of Women's History Month, for keeping the Blues alive in the Upstate and putting on a very professional event - we have some world-class talent in South Carolina and She keeps it rolling smoooooothly - more like a concert than a free jam. Excellent.

Vic Scaricamazza played drums on one set and got so inspired, he came right back to Cola-Town and invented an organization for Midlands Blues (sadly lacking in the past decade or so) called Columbia Blues Mob - it's a group on Facebook that is intended to support our local Blues Jam in Columbia - newly hosted by the New Utopia on Rosewood Drive in the Jim Casey Complex (not all the fireworks will be Jim's this Tuesday!) and to bring together a spot (online and in person) where Blues fans and musicians can meet and push the Blues scene forward. Eventually the goal is to link up with the Lowcountry and Upstate Blues groups; then interact with regional Blues interest groups to form a stronger Regional Blues presence. All are welcome to join in!

The Blues Jam features core group members, Doug Allen, Cleve Edwards, Vic... and many many more... check the group page for info about the management of it. As a Blues dj, I just play records... you won't see me up on that stage (and you thank me for that, I know!)

Tinsley Ellis is one of the most electrifying blues rock guitarists and vocalists on the scene today. Tinsley is on tour to promote his latest Alligator Records CD, Speak No Evil, and will perform at The Double Door Inn in Charlotte on Saturday, April 16, 2011.

Billboard magazine declared, "Atlanta's Tinsley Ellis sings like a man possessed and wields a ferocious lead guitar...one of today's premier blues/rock players," while Rolling Stone says Tinsley plays "feral blues guitar... non-stop gigging has sharpened his six-string to a razor's edge...his eloquence dazzles...he achieves pyrotechnics that rival early Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton."

Produced by Ellis, Speak No Evil is the most guitar-driven album of his career and features Tinsley's fiercest, most brutally honest and hard-hitting original songs to date. And as you'd imagine, the guitar work is positively stellar. Speak No Evil is as wide-ranging and inspired a recording as Ellis has ever made, and one of the most satisfying Southern blues-rock albums in ages.

Blues Moon Radio Show Playlist January 25, 2011 - Drink Small

Happy birthday to late January Bluesmen and women - with an especially hearty Happy Birthday to South Carolina's own Blues Doctor, Drink Small...

You can see him perform at his Birthday Bash in Bishopville Friday night - and he'll make an appearance at Mac's on Main in Columbia Saturday night...

We will welcome him to the second hour of Blues Moon Radio - live in studio!

Starting us out tonight will be some artists with late January birthdays...

Our live interview with Drink Small [www.myspace.com/drinksmallblues] and Moses from Mystic Vibrations was a blast! Drink was in his element with his "Drinkisms" as he touted his new 5 song CD, called "Drinkisms," which features the Mystic Vibrations band members. The merging of Blues and Reggae took a natural flow on that CD - especially the cut "Jamaican Blues."

We wish Drink and the band great success with the CD and tour... there is also a Music Maker Foundation CD [http://www.musicmaker.org/news_post/drink-small-the-real-blues-doctor/ ] featuring Drink that fans will want to have in their collections. Drink Small was given an honorary Ph.D. in October of 2010, so he really is a Blues Doctor now... regardless, he is a one-of-a-kind treasure - one whom we at Blues Moon Radio are so glad to call a friend and welcome on the air. "Still Great at 78! - Cannot wait - because at 79 he's going to be mighty fine!" if I might toss out one of my own "Drinkisms!"

Thanks again and VERY happy birthday ... please check out one of his birthday celebrations: Bishopville Opera House Friday night, Mac's on Main (Columbia SC) Saturday night and Feb 5, 2011 he will be at the 145 Club in Winnsboro S.C. Come out and support a living legend!

We didn't have time to complete our "end of January" birthdays ... so tune in next week when you will hear:
Buddy Moss - Jealous Hearted Man
Elmore James - Sho' Nuff I Do
Beale Streeters with Bobby Blue Bland - Lovin' Blues
Hot Lips Page - My Gal is Gone
Paul Gayten - The Music Goes 'Round and 'Round

There is still some time for artists and promoters to send materials to PO Box 5591 Columbia SC 29250 if you would like to be included. Please include duplicates if you can so the show will be able to promote your artists after the fundraiser.

Thanks to everyone who has so generously participated in the past - this year's promises to be a doozie!

Tune in to the Blues Moon tonight from 6-8 p.m. for more amazing Blues Women!

WUSC FM - http://www.wusc.sc.edu/ for streaming Internet (join in early - streams are limited) and 90.5 FM and HD1 Columbia for our local listeners!

It's going to be great!
Your Blues pal,
Clair DeLune

Preview of my reviews to come; some music, some art.

On Day Three of the New Year my resolution to try to reduce backlogs is underway. I am reviewing CDs I've gotten in the past month, so I can play new music on the radio show.

I know... the show is more about history than new, but we have to keep up with what is going on in Blues today in order to keep the genre alive. So, there's that whole balance in life thing in its interplay. Love that!

What are you Blue about this new year? What can I play that will help target (and hopefully lift a load from your spirit) your woes? I'm on Facebook and Twitter (admittedly much less often than I should be) and always happy to hear from you. Click on the links at left to friend or follow me.

Good news... Gary Erwin has posted the brochure for the Charleston Blues Bash online at www.bluesbash.com - please join us for the kickoff to the Carolina Blues Year.

And I've discovered a Blues Art artist I was not aware of before... that's three this week...Paul Lachine (he's a Blues Machine!)...  check his work at:

I'll post reviews here later...

Blues Moon hiatus ends Jan. 5 at 6

I appreciate the understanding of listeners and fans about the absence of the Blues Moon radio airwaves these past two Tuesdays -- although it is not abnormal for me to take a hiatus during the winter holidays, this set of absences was caused by the unexpected illness and death of two dear friends' parents.

My heart goes out to my friends during this time of mourning.

The Blues Moon will resume on Jan. 5, 2010. I wish all of you a great new year - prosperous (because that is a good thing, despite what some think - if you don't believe me, just make more than you need, give away the excess to a good cause* and see how much better the world is); healthful and happy.

And although I see 2010 as being better than 2008 or 2009, I think I'll see things more clearly in 20/20!

All good things to you and yours!
Best,
clair delune and RawkyDawg, Blues Defender

*Rocky's favorite charity (and by that same token, mine too) is SQ Rescue, the German Shepherd (and other breed) foundation that brought my formerly starved and beaten sweetheart of a pup home to live with me. SQ Rescue tells me they are unable to take in any more dogs until they can raise more funds because so many dogs they had adopted out have been returned because of the economy... it's truly sad. I'm donating and hope you will, too. But you choose one you like if you have one near you... or another type of charity altogether.

Alright, Blues lovers, tonight is the show we have waited all year for - the Clair DeLune Blues Moon Radio Christmas and Holiday special. Christmas Blues is one of my favorite niche categories and tonight I will be extending the normal showtime by an hour to fit in an amazing mix of Blues, Swing and Jazzy tunes to make your holiday bright.

WUSC-FM is an educational station sponsored by the University of South Carolina, where I taught music history and have done a Blues radio show for twenty years. Tune in from 6-9 p.m. (U.S./ET; which is -5 GMT for you Cool Yule International cats and kittens).

We Webstream at http://wusc.sc.edu/, so click that link, then follow the listening links. It's a good idea to test the signal in advance just in case you might have to download some software to listen because you don't want to miss a minute of the music - only one song has been played before on the show - the rest are new to me (and possibly to you!). Yes, kids, "Christmas in Jail," by the Youngsters, is the perennial fave that MUST be a part of every holiday show. I wouldn't dream of depriving you of the quintessential Blues Christmas song - the most requested song each year.

Blues Concert Calendar
I enjoyed the Jam Room's Christmas Party at Hunter Gatherer last night (love the Capitol City Playboys and Drink Small) and got to see so many friends I had not seen in ages - especially Portland's newest Cola-Town expatriates, Amy and Carl Singmaster, who are sorely missed here.

I also recommend that those of you who are in S.C. head out to see some great acts:
Friday - Toni Spearman doing a rare stateside concert to raise money for homeless children - Greenwood, SC
Friday - Flat Out Strangers and Hick'ry Hawkins pairing up to dazzle at the White Mule (Main St. Columbia)
Saturday - The amazing Drink Small - a S.C. legend - appears at Utopia, which is catty-corner behind the Rite Aid on Rosewood Drive in Columbia.

e-mail me at bluesgoddess@gmail.com if I'm missing something!

Sad Blues News
Sending special prayers of love and strength to our dear friend, Nicole Hart, who lost her beloved husband, Lance Ong, a week ago. There is a memorial to raise money to offset their huge medical bills tonight in New Jersey. Please go if you can, but you can donate regardless if you wish: Lance Ong Benefit http://www.prlog.org/10430770-lance-ong-benefit-december-15th-2009-at-mexicali-blues-1409-queen-anne-road-teaneck-nj.html.

Her CD, Treasure, is a treasure, so if you'd like to help her and get a great CD, I highly recommend it (I'm not affiliated in any way - totally independent recommendation).

I was unable to do my show, or provide any warning about its cancellation last week, because of the sudden death of my Aunt Patsy, who was as beautiful a soul as any I have known, much like my own Mother. I apologize to those who tried to tune in or check for updates. I was "off the Wi-Fi grid" during my trip with no access to modern contrivances.

I'll be hoping you are tuned in tonight. That's my Christmas wish... that and for you and yours to have a safe, happy and prosperous holiday and 2010!

Blues Moon Radio Playlist for Dec. 1, 2009 - A really BIG show!

Hi Blues fans!
Getting ready to dash out to the station for a great BIG show tonight... I figure that it is only a matter of common sense to put the BIG show (featuring songs that have BIG in the title) on after Feast Week! Umph.

Before you commit to the exercycle, listen in to the Blues Moon Radio Show tonight with Clair DeLune as she presents: Lard have mercy... the BIG show. Should I dedicate this to Ed Sullivan?

Computer tsuris compels me to post an image of the songlist because after all my crashes and fixes (even the cookies on my computer revolted against me today...s-heesh!) there is no time to type it in... there will be a few surprises sprinkled in.

I'm also excited to be interviewing Toni Spearman this Friday at Mac's on Main in Columbia, S.C.

Here is the playlist as it stands an hour before showtime:

Blues Moon Radio Show Playlist for Nov. 17, 2009

Apparently the entire playlist I typed in got wiped clean when it refreshed... I'll try to get something up soon to replace it.

I apologize!

Artist of the Week - Norton Buffalo, RIP

Absolutely saddened at the news of the death of Norton Buffalo, harmonica player extraordinaire, who died this week at an early age from cancer.

My heart goes out to his wife, Lisa Flores, who is a beautiful lady and musician. It is clear from his Web posts to fans that Norton loved her very dearly; and one look at her photos will provide the evidence why - she emanates such a beautiful vibe, and so did he.

Condolences to his entire family and friends as well. His career spanned five decades and he has played with so many great Bluesmen and women it is a terrible loss to the music world - and not just Blues... Norton played with rock greats such as Steve Miller and the Doobie Brothers - and even had a role as a private in Heaven's Gate.

As Norton enters Heaven's Gate now, with the burgeoning rock and Blues bands welcoming him with open arms (and some open tuning, too, I imagine!) we on earth will miss him and pay tribute in our small way.

The Blues Moon with Clair DeLune was proud to call Norton a friend, and will dedicate Tuesday's show as a tribute to Norton Buffalo, and the artists he played with through the years.

We'll start with two from Norton, then play some from his longtime partner, Roy Rogers, then go on to many of the artists he is pictured with on his Web site, such as Pinetop Perkins, robben Ford, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Elvin Bishop (with some remarks about the PB Band and days at the Fillmore with Bill Graham), James Cotton, Goeroge Thorogood, Maria Muldaur, Chris Cain, Sonny Terry, Taj Mahal, and Duke Robillard.

I'd be pleased if you would join us. Tune in Tuesday from 6-8 ET/USA at http://wusc.sc.edu for the Blues Moon Radio Show.
