Tribute to Lonnie Mack and Prince on tonight's Blues Moon Radio April 26, 2016

I was stunned and heartbroken to learn about Lonnie Mack's death.

I had a personal experience with him. After listening to his records in awe from the age of four, I flew across country and saw him play three decades ago in San Francisco. Long interesting story about how it transpired that I'll save for my memoirs, but the short chat we had that evening after he performed made it golden for me in the city of the Golden Gate Bridge.

It stuck with me how kind and patient he was -- taking the time to speak with me for half an hour. He seemed genuinely surprised and pleased that a young girl would be such a fan for so long.

It was in a club called Wolfgang's, and I spied Bill Graham, whose middle name was Wolfgang, so I surmised it was his club. Graham was also surprised I recognized him and picked him out of the crowd - but I wanted to compliment him for all he had done for music, too.

Both were gracious, both pioneers, both off-the-charts innovators.

Both are gone.

So we pay tribute to Lonnie Mack, as well as Prince, who died the same day and who was a musician's musician as well as having multitudes of fans. We don't play top 40 hits (of the last 40 years) on our station, so we'll feature Slam Allen's cover of Purple Rain as we tip our "raspberry berets."

We also welcome Tish Hinojosa to Columbia this Saturday evening, sponsored by the fine folks at the UU Coffeehouse. Contact them at UUCoffeehouse on Facebook for tickets and information.

On the fourth week of the month, we always feature our artist of the millennium, Drink Small, the Blues Doctor. Tonight's cut is from a very early, very obscure, LP that I had been hunting for years. Glad to share some of these long-unplayed cuts with Drink Small fans!

We did not finish all we had from last week, so we'll sprinkle some of those cuts atop the following menu:

As always, thank you so much for taking time to tune in!

Featuring roots artist, Angela Easterling, Tuesday, April 5, 2016

Tonight,  Blues Moon Radio is pleased to feature an interview with Angela Easterling.
Roots/Americana singer,

Easterling is a resident of South Carolina, who returned here after years of living on the West Coast and who is partnered, in music as in life, with longtime friend of the show, Brandon Turner.

Her voice puts the "angel" in Angela, and I'm sure you will enjoy listening to her sing, as well as talk about her musical influences and life philosophy.

Angela will be appearing with Brandon Turner at the UU Coffeehouse on Saturday, April 9th. Click the icon for details, or call the hotline at: 803-200-2824 to reserve advance tickets or for more information. You can also connect on Facebook at UUCoffeehouse.  Don't forget to mark your calendars for Tish Hinojosa, who will finish out the UU season on April 30th.

Following Angela's interview, we'll play some Springtime Things, Plus Tax; and will fill in with some leftover money songs from last week's fundraiser. Imagine... leftover money! What a concept.

Enjoy the show and special thanks to Angela Easterling for taking time out to be on the show.

Blues Moon Radio playlist: Titanic and Reptiles -- Tuesday, April 15, 2014

On last week's Blues Moon Radio show we featured a couple of songs that mentioned the Titanic Disaster; and this week, April 15th, 2014, we will bookend the tribute to those who lost their lives when that great ship went down with several more songs dedicated to the tragic event, which remains in our hearts and minds over a century later.

Snake Oil: proven NOT to cure what
ails you, but some good music might
make you feel fine. No snakes were
harmed in the posting of this photo,
which is available royalty-free, per
BING, at:  http://farm4.static.flickr.com/

To take our minds off a certain taxing situation and to denote the onset of the slithery season, with your host having already uncovered her first frog and snake of the season in her garden (THAT will get one's blood going!), we will play songs with a reptilian/amphibian theme... and as a special bonus, we'll focus on alligators, too. Sorry turtles. Perhaps next time you will make the cut... you were a little slow on the uptake. Yes, I know... not your fault at all, dears. I completely understand. Let's hope I can avoid a "tort"oise lawsuit ... ahem.

Not trying to act like a snake oil salesman, but Blues Moon Radio has the music that could just cure (Disclaimer: or mitigate... or do nothing at ALL for) your ailments... just tune in to WUSC-FM via the stream at www.wusc.sc.edu between 6-8 p.m. ET/USA each Tuesday (look for the playlist and "listen" button) and wait for the good feelings to pour all over you. Might help if you exercised regularly, ate better and dang it... when ARE you going to make that doctor's appointment you've been whining about, eh? I cannot do it all, you know. LOL!

In addition to our customary tribute to Drink Small (this week's cut will be announced on air), here is a list of  some of the music we'll feature:

Blues Moon Radio playlist for April 15, 2014

Our birthday tributes will include the legendary Bessie Smith and one of the Jelly Roll Kings, Frank Frost:

Blues Moon Radio birthday commemorations for April 15, 2014

Thanks as always for tuning in... your hosts, RockyDawg-BluesDefender and I, welcome you to LIKE us on Facebook at @Blues Moon Radio and follow us on Twitter at BluesMoonRadio - don't forget to LIKE "Drink Small, the Blues Doctor" on his official page on Facebook, as well.

We hope you enjoy the show... and don't get snakebit on April 15th! Remember to sign and send those tax forms!

Blues Moon Radio - fight between Valentine's and Mardi Gras

Blue heart
Valentine's Day can turn the truest heart Blue(s)
The calendar poses a bit of a quandary on the night of the 12th... it is Mardi Gras, and the closest Tuesday to Valentine's Day... but since Mardi Gras falls on the actual Tuesday (ahem, how odd, eh? LOL, since it is Fat Tuesday, it always will) I'm pushing Valentine's Day celebration (or lament, since it is a Blues show, after all - not everyone is happy on that day) ahead by a week.

Also want to pay tribute to Black History Month - but we do that all year long on Blues Moon Radio... the tributes and appreciation of the contributions of the Afrocentric/American music that is Blues is ongoing and deeply embedded in our hearts.

This Tuesday evening's Blues Moon Radio (Feb. 5) has lots of heart... next week we'll have a confunction junction of Mardi Gras and Valentine's Day on the same Tuesday, so I'm getting the jump on love and loss this week... tune in for "Have a Heart - The Blues and You for Valentine's Day - a bit early" - believe me, you will be glad you did. Great songs! Some longing, some lust, some hearts breaking and biting the dust. 6-8 p.m. on WUSC-FM - more details soon in the way of a  playlist.

 Stay true Blues!

Muddy Waters and Leonard Chess Tribute Oct. 9, 2012

As an educational station, WUSC tries to bring you music you might not be aware of... but every Blues Moon, I find a reason to go all Chess on ya. Here is a bit of history that prompts me to spend some in-depth time at Chess Records this Tuesday. It cannot help but be a fantastic show - all thanks to the artists, none due to me. Guaranteed to be one you Chicago Blues fans and Blues-Rock fans will want to mark your calendars for... Blues Moon Radio thanks you!

Artist(s) of the week for Tuesday, Oct. 9 from 6-8 p.m. ET (-5 GMT - and yes, we stream around the world as well as broadcast and HD cast at WUSC-FM 90.5 and HD1 Columbia (S.C.): Muddy Waters and his Chess Records pals... in Mid-October 1969, Muddy was involved in a terrible head-on automobile collision that killed his driver and left him hospitalized for two months; a week later, Leonard Chess - just after selling Chess Records - suffered a heart attack behind the wheel and died in the resulting crash.

Here is a site with an excerpt of a Chess Biography:
http://www.blues-finland.com/english/muddy_waters_biography_3.html

We will pay tribute to the wondrous contributions of the artists at that amazing set of labels, with special attention to McKinley Morganfield himself - and many of his label-mates and band-mates.

Tune in to Blues Moon Radio's stream at WUSC-FM www.wusc.sc.edu for a tour de force of Chess music. Tuesday, Oct. 9 from 6-8 p.m. E.T. (-5 GMT - and yes, we stream around the world as well as broadcast and HD cast at WUSC-FM 90.5 and HD1 Columbia S.C.).

And please ... drive defensively - work hard to become a type B driver... this is one time in life you don't want to be a A.

Trust me, dear hearts. "Mama" is right about this.

Check back... more to come!
Clair DeLune and RockyDawg, Blues Defender!

Blues Moon Radio playlist Dec. 6, 2011 - Tribute to Hubert Sumlin

Welcome to this week's Blues Moon Radio show... for those of you who have come to this page for the first time, we are pleased to meet you. The Blues Moon has been on WUSC-FM (and streaming via the Web) since 1990. We hope you will "LIKE" and "favorite" this page, as well as bookmark www.bluesmoonradio.blogspot.com.

The weekly show airs at 6 p.m. (-5GMT) and "Tuesday is Bluesday." Your host, Clair Delune - and her intrepid inspiration/co-host, RockyDawg, Blues Defender are happy to have you tune in via the Web at http://wusc.sc.edu, the University of South Carolina's award-winning college station. You may also stream the show via ITunes at radio/college and university/WUSC-FM.

Ms. DeLune is a writer, historian, artist, counselor, university administrator and public relations practitioner who has taught upper level music appreciation courses at the Unversity of South Carolina, including Blues History, Rock and Roll History, Jump/Swing/Boogie-Woogie, and Women in Popular Music of the 20th Century. She has contributed numerous articles and chapters to numerous books and periodicals and endeavors to make the show historical, informative, empathic and entertaining. In her spare time, she trains horses and works to help rescue animals who are abandoned or abused.

Tonight's show will be the last Blues Moon Radio Show of the year. We'll rejoin your lives (already in progress) in mid-January - please stay tuned to the blog and FB page for a specific date).

We mourn the loss of so many of our elder statesmen of the Blues this year... most recently a fine fellow named Hubert Sumlin, who got his start with Howlin' Wolf, then got a "better offer" from Muddy Waters... only to ask Wolf to take him back a year later, which he did. Sumlin shared with me that he used to crawl into the gigs through the bathrooom windows of venues because he was too young to get in; and looked too young to be snuck in even as a member of the band. Sumlin was always smiling, every time we met, and always had an upbeat and positive attitude. He has played with the greats, and he turned around and shared his knowledge with the up-and-coming Blues greats through the past three decades.

He had just passed his landmark 80th birthday on Nov. 16th... but was reportedly too ill to play and passed away, in his sleep, Sunday morning, Dec. 4th in the wee wee hours.

He will be missed terribly by so many, me among them. I hope his friends, colleagues, loved ones and those who knew him better than I, will find comfort in how well he was loved and admired by so many across the globe.

And Blues Heaven expands to fit in another landmark great man in the best Blues band ever assembled.

We will pay tribute to Hubert Sumlin, one of the Bluesmen I most admired, at the top of the first hour. Then we'll move to some of the nominees for Best of 2011 - and you all are welcomed to comment on this page to vote for your faves... you can vote for multiple people - there are 20 slots for "Best of 2011"... so if you'd like to submit a rating for your top three or five, that will work fine!

Then, we'll finish out with more Christmas Blues - including the amazing Clifford Curry with his new holiday single... and I'm hoping we will have time for Big Boy Pete and Hilton Valentine's Merry Skifflemas! That might just cheer us up a bit after this sad week.

Wishing you all a very happy holiday season and wonderful, prosperous and healthy new year. As always, thank YOU for tuning in... we appreciate YOU!

Blues Moon Radio Interview with Roy Rogers Tuesday, July 12, 2011

I'm excited about tonight's show... we were honored to be asked to interview Roy Rogers by the fine folks at Blind Pig Records, who bring us so many great artists. Roy collaborated with The Doors' keyboardist, Ray Manzarek, for Translucent Blues, which is decidedly a departure from straight Blues, but one I think Blues and Rock fans alike will enjoy.

Roy and I chatted about his roots and early beginnings, and started our interview - off the record - talking about his name and the inevitable associations with Roy Rogers, the singing cowboy. Interestingly, my show co-host, RockyDawg-BluesDefender, who is usually silent in the recording studio, barked up a storm during our interview - in such a way that I had to decide between his "voice-over" staying on or losing some great content by Roy. The singing cowboy Roy had a German Shepherd named Bullet, and I cannot help but find the humor in the fact that the only time my German Shepherd interrupted a recording was for Roy Rogers, the Blues slide guitar legend. I probably should have distinguished the two for RockStar... :) I expect he thought he was just sayin' "howdy" to Bullet's Dad! I'll do better with my prep in the future, but enjoy the barking... and Roy's response.

The show will kick off with some music with a theme of leaving; we'll try to fit in some birthday tributes and we'll hear from Roy and from the new CD, as well as from some of his biggest influences - Bo Diddley, Robert Johnson and  John Lee Hooker (he produced four of The Hook's albums, btw, and knew him well - perhaps we can chat with him more about those experiences another time).

The show starts at 6, and the interview will air around 7 p.m. EDT/USA - in most countries that is -5 GMT.

You can tune in at http://wusc.sc.edu - then follow the link in the top left quadrant of your screen - tune in early to get a slot - sometimes we hit our streaming limit pretty early. It's an alternative station, and the show before mine has some interesting music; the show after mine features covers of famous songs done in interesting new ways so stay tuned after I sign off and make a night of it!

Playlist for Blues Moon Radio June 28, 2011

The celebratory fireworks have not begun (as of this writing and from my earshot perspective) yet, but we are prepping for two big celebrations in Blues Moon Radio world...

Our loyal mascots, RockyDawg, Blues Defender, and Claudette, Blues Doggess (RIP = miss you baby grrrrrl), were both born on or near the Fourth of July, so we will celebrate this triad of fabulousness on tonight's Blues Moon Radio show.

Our first set has gone to the dogs and we'll start with a nod from our pal, Lucky, because I love German Police/Shepherd Dogs!

Laurence "Luckyman" Beall - Wanted by the Police
Birmingham Jug Band - German Blues
Blind Blake - Police Dog Blues
ID
Etta Baker - Police Dog Blues (read my chapter on Baker in Making Notes: Music of the Carolinas)

Archie Edwards - The Road is Rough and Rocky
Mr. Google Eyes/Billy Ford - Rough and Rocky Road
The Nightengale Jubilaires - Rough and Rocky Road

And now Rocky has to go lie down, eat a treatie and take a little nap before the Independence Day tribute.

Chris Duarte - Free 4 Me
(levels) Eddie Turner - Cost of Freedom
Robert Pete Williams - Free Again
Mildred Anderson - I'm Free
The Titans - Free and Easy

Ruth Brown - Wild Wild Young Men

Tarheel Slim - Wildcat Tamer
Joe Williams/Sonny Boy Williamson - Wild Cow Moan
Bessie Smith - I'm Wild About that Thing

* These sites are not up-to-date, but CDs are still available for sale from these amazing female artists. Robin Rogers, who died last year, just after learning of her nomination for a Blues Foundation award, indeed received it.
Saffire is no longer actively touring, but they have left a legacy of powerhouse, yet whimsical, Blues from a mature female perspective.  Enjoy!

Thanks for tuning in to the Blues Moon with Clair DeLune radio show... Rocky and I thank you!

Special guest tonight on Blues Moon Radio

Tuesday is Blues-day and we have another great show lined up for you this week.

I am excited to present Laurence "Luckyman" Beall live in the studio tonight ... the show will run from 6-9 p.m. (EDT/USA) and in his honor we will also feature some roots music from the Rockabilly realm... LLBeall is that rare mix of Blues, Country, Rockabilly, Roots and Rock done in a way that hits the rusty nail on the head as it bangs in that ornery plank on the old barn. He plays it, lives it, dresses it and talks it. Thanks to Fred Ingram for turning me on to another musical gem who has found a home in South Carolina!

Check out his page:

Laurence Luckyman Beall

http://laurencebeall.com/ will take you to his Web site. His FB page is under his full name... while you are on FB, be sure to LIKE the Blues Moon Radio page... that's where many of my music updates will appear.

See you tonight on Blues Moon Radio at www.wusc.sc.edu (check in early so you are assured of an open stream link!). Space is limited...

Don't forget the Blues Jam afterwards at Utopia at 3830 Rosewood Drive Columbia, S.C. USA. from 8:30-11:30... you can jam and still get up to do your biz tomorrow!
