New release from local SC Blues musician, Rev. Marv Ward

Great news! Our dear friend and SC Blues luminary, the right Reverend Marv Ward, has just finished his new CD for release in early 2012 (I think you can listen and download now, though)... here's the link to his FB music store!

Marv hails from the northeastern part of the USA, but has graced the capital city of South Carolina with his presence for many years.

He has opened for a long list of headliners with his unique style that emulates "that high, lonesome sound." As a member of some of Columbia SC's seminal Blues bands, such as Blues DeVille and Congaree, Marv has proven his capacity to work in several genres (rockin' hot Blues to Piedmont/Delta style duos) and he commands a solo stage admirably, too, as a regular performer at Utopia Food and Spirits. His sound ranges to include a folksy, Americana style. He's much like the songsters of old, such as Lead Belly, who could boast a wide range of styles to suit an array of audiences.

Blues Moon Radio listeners are enthralled with Marv's entertaining stories and songs each time he comes on the radio to play live, so we look forward to another visit in early 2012 when we will debut his new CD. Blues Moon Radio Interview with Roy Rogers Tuesday, July 12, 2011

I'm excited about tonight's show... we were honored to be asked to interview Roy Rogers by the fine folks at Blind Pig Records, who bring us so many great artists. Roy collaborated with The Doors' keyboardist, Ray Manzarek, for Translucent Blues, which is decidedly a departure from straight Blues, but one I think Blues and Rock fans alike will enjoy.

Roy and I chatted about his roots and early beginnings, and started our interview - off the record - talking about his name and the inevitable associations with Roy Rogers, the singing cowboy. Interestingly, my show co-host, RockyDawg-BluesDefender, who is usually silent in the recording studio, barked up a storm during our interview - in such a way that I had to decide between his "voice-over" staying on or losing some great content by Roy. The singing cowboy Roy had a German Shepherd named Bullet, and I cannot help but find the humor in the fact that the only time my German Shepherd interrupted a recording was for Roy Rogers, the Blues slide guitar legend. I probably should have distinguished the two for RockStar... :) I expect he thought he was just sayin' "howdy" to Bullet's Dad! I'll do better with my prep in the future, but enjoy the barking... and Roy's response.

The show will kick off with some music with a theme of leaving; we'll try to fit in some birthday tributes and we'll hear from Roy and from the new CD, as well as from some of his biggest influences - Bo Diddley, Robert Johnson and  John Lee Hooker (he produced four of The Hook's albums, btw, and knew him well - perhaps we can chat with him more about those experiences another time).

The show starts at 6, and the interview will air around 7 p.m. EDT/USA - in most countries that is -5 GMT.

On Day Three of the New Year my resolution to try to reduce backlogs is underway. I am reviewing CDs I've gotten in the past month, so I can play new music on the radio show.

I know... the show is more about history than new, but we have to keep up with what is going on in Blues today in order to keep the genre alive. So, there's that whole balance in life thing in its interplay. Love that!

Christmas Blues is one of my favorite niche categories and tonight I will be extending the normal showtime by an hour to fit in an amazing mix of Blues, Swing and Jazzy tunes to make your holiday bright.


WUSC-FM is an educational station sponsored by the University of South Carolina, where I taught music history and have done a Blues radio show for twenty years. Tune in from 6-9 p.m. (U.S./ET; which is -5 GMT for you Cool Yule International cats and kittens).

It's a good idea to test the signal in advance just in case you might have to download some software to listen because you don't want to miss a minute of the music - only one song has been played before on the show - the rest are new to me (and possibly to you!). Yes, kids, "Christmas in Jail," by the Youngsters, is the perennial fave that MUST be a part of every holiday show. I wouldn't dream of depriving you of the quintessential Blues Christmas song - the most requested song each year.


Blues Concert Calendar
I enjoyed the Jam Room's Christmas Party at Hunter Gatherer last night (love the Capitol City Playboys and Drink Small) and got to see so many friends I had not seen in ages - especially Portland's newest Cola-Town expatriates, Amy and Carl Singmaster, who are sorely missed here.

Sending special prayers of love and strength to our dear friend, Nicole Hart, who lost her beloved husband, Lance Ong, a week ago. There is a memorial to raise money to offset their huge medical bills tonight in New Jersey. I apologize to those who tried to tune in or check for updates. I was "off the Wi-Fi grid" during my trip with no access to modern contrivances.

My apologies for the successive crashes of the station computer last week, which made it impossible to post the playlist. I don't even know what got played... how dependent on technology have I become? What? Pen and paper? Whussdat?

Anyway, hopefully this week we shall be cured of such horrors.

Condolences to Koko Taylor's loved ones and fans:

I was privileged to hear Koko live many, many times and tried never to miss an opportunity to see her; I was honored to interview her for my Blues radio show, The Blues Moon with Clair DeLune, and found her to be wise, warm and wonderful in person, and just as vibrant as she was onstage.

How much she will be missed can only be measured in her family, friends' and fans' hearts, but I can tell you that mine has broken and I know her dear family and friends must be heartbroken, too. But what a wonderful life she had - with such accomplishments - and that is something to hold onto.

I will be doing a tribute show to her this Tuesday and thinking of you all on Thursday, sending you prayers. May God comfort you in your loss.

Koko Taylor tribute

Since the days the Classic Blues women of the 1920s dominated the Blues scene, few women have opted to sing the Blues, but Koko Taylor sang with most of the important Blues artists over her career and she was the envy of many a Bluesman because of her gritty, growling vocals that many aspired to emulate, but only she perfected.

Her female contemporaries in the late 1950s were the incomparable legends Big Mama Thornton and Big Maybelle, but Taylor’s career outlasted both – ranging six decades… but sadly ending June 3, 2009, with her death from complications following surgery to correct gastrointestinal bleeding.

Taylor’s signature tune, a 1966 cover of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Wang Dang Doodle,” penned by Chess A&R man and perennial bassist, Willie Dixon, was instantly recognizable at her concerts – and always received with bursts of wild enthusiasm.

Taylor was featured in several films and soundtracks from David Lynch’s outlandish “Wild at Heart” to the mainstream family movie, “Adventures in Babysitting.” Set in Chicago, the movie features Koko covering Howlin’ Wolf’s “Evil” just as the young heroes begin to realize they are in deep trouble with a very bad group of wrong-doers. It sets the entire tone for what is to come and weaves Chicago Blues through the movie. Both movies are highly recommended, for totally different reasons.

She also appeared in “The Blues is Alive and Well in Chicago” in 1970.

She broke ground in bringing Blues to modern TV sitcoms, as well. Her powerful voice on “I’m a Woman” is lip-synched by Rudy – the four-year-old daughter of Dr. Huxtable on “The Cosby Show.” One can only hope the spirit Koko Taylor put into that rendition had a lifetime effect on that tiny Blues Queen aspirant.

Koko Taylor is undeniably a force of nature, as one of her CDs attests, with many awards bestowed upon her.

She’s received Grammy nominations for seven of her last eight Alligator albums, and she won a Grammy in 1984 for the live multi-artist album Blues Explosion on Atlantic Records. In 2004 she was presented with the coveted National Heritage Fellowship Award from the National Endowment For The Arts. She holds 25 Blues Music Awards (more than any other blues artist, male or female). A major feather in her cap came on March 3, 1993, when Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley honored Taylor with a Legend Of The Year Award, and declared “Koko Taylor Day” throughout Chicago. In 1998, Chicago Magazine named her “Chicagoan Of The Year,” and in 1999, Taylor was inducted into the Blues Foundation’s Hall Of Fame. “There are many kings of the blues,” said The Boston Globe, “but only one queen. Koko’s voice is still capable of pinning a listener to the back wall.”

Yes, another of Blues’ third generation of elder statesmen – or woman in this case – has gone on to that Jook Joint in heaven. Following Junior Wells, Johnny Copeland and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Blues fans mourn the loss of another of the vanguard of the genre.

On a personal note, I learned about this in the wee wee hours of June 4. But the day before, I had sat down – I just happened to be facing West and a little North – and for some reason I envisioned the time I first interviewed Koko Taylor. It was the mid-’90s and I’d seen Koko many times, but had only been doing the Blues Moon radio show for a few years and finally got up my nerve to request an interview with her. When I arrived at Rockafella’s (a club formerly in the Five Points section of Columbia, S.C.) her manager said she would not be doing interviews because Miss Taylor was “upset.” I acceded, but inquired if I could just meet her, shake her hand and thank her for her contribution to the Blues. He was gracious and took me in the dark dressing room. She could not have been more warm and lovely. She would not hear of me leaving and we talked for nearly an hour, and as I left so she could get onstage, she insisted upon exchanging home phone numbers so we could stay in touch. I recall us talking about the loss of her long-time husband, “Pops” Taylor, and how sorely he was missed by her. That day – before I knew she had died, and now wondering what time that was – I sat thinking about how eventually the two of them would be together again in heaven.

It breaks my heart that she is gone – it is almost surreal to consider that fact – because she underpinned so many of the Blues experiences I’ve had. I’ve probably seen her live more times than anyone else by triple.

But it warms my heart to know that she sang until the end, received Traditional Female Performer of the Year at the Blues Awards (formerly the W.C. Handy Awards) this May in Memphis, her hometown. The daughter of a sharecropper ended up “owning” the capital of the Blues. Very fitting.

Koko – it goes without saying that you will be dearly missed by so many who loved you and your music.

Koko Taylor sometimes spelled KoKo Taylor (September 28, 1928 – June 3, 2009)[1] was an American blues musician, popularly known as the "Queen of the Blues." She was known primarily for her rough powerful vocals and traditional blues stylings. In a May 2003 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine, she was quoted as saying, "My life is like a train ride in fields of blue."
Life and career
Born Cora Walton in Shelby County, Tennessee, Taylor was the daughter of a sharecropper.[2] She left Memphis for Chicago, Illinois in 1952 with her husband, truck driver Robert "Pops" Taylor.[1] In the late 1950s she began singing in Chicago blues clubs. She was spotted by Willie Dixon in 1962, and this led to wider performances and her first recording contract. In 1965, Taylor was signed by Chess Records, for which her single "Wang Dang Doodle" (written by Dixon, and a hit for Howlin' Wolf five years earlier), featuring guitarist Little Walter,[3] became a major hit, reaching number four on the R&B charts in 1966, and selling a million copies.[1] Taylor recorded many versions of this Dixon-penned song over the past few decades and has added more material, both original and covers, but never repeated that initial chart success.
National touring in the late 1960s and early 1970s improved her fan base, and she became accessible to a wider record-buying public when she signed with Alligator Records in 1975. She recorded nine albums for Alligator, 8 of which were Grammy-nominated), and come to dominate the female blues singer ranks, winning twenty five W. C. Handy Awards (more than any other artist). After her recovery from a near-fatal car crash in 1989, the 1990s found Taylor in films such as Blues Brothers 2000, and she opened a blues club on Division Street in Chicago in 1994, but it closed in 1999.
Taylor influenced musicians such as Bonnie Raitt, Shemekia Copeland, Janis Joplin, Shannon Curfman, and Susan Tedeschi. In the years prior to her death, she performed over 70 concerts a year and resided just south of Chicago in Country Club Hills, Illinois.
In 2008, the Internal Revenue Service said that Taylor owed $400,000 in back taxes, penalties and interest. Her tax problems concerned 1998, 2000 and 2001; for those years combined, her adjusted gross income was $949,000.[4]
Taylor died on June 3, 2009, after complications from surgery for gastrointestinal bleeding on May 19, 2009.[5] Her final performance was at the Blues Music Awards, on May 7, 2009.

Celebration Will Launch New Book from NFP: Making Notes: Music of the Carolinas

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Writers, musicians and book lovers will gather on Wed., May 14, as NFP’s newest book is unveiled during a festive evening of readings, live music and book signings.

Making Notes: Music of the Carolinas was edited by Ann Wicker and showcases more than 50 contributors (note: including Clair DeLune writing on Etta Baker and Shrimp City Slim).

It’s a lively, readable sampler of essays, articles and reminiscences about the region that’s famous for being home to musicians as diverse as James Taylor, James Brown, John Coltrane, Hootie and the Blowfish, and Nina Simone. They are just a few of the icons profiled in this collection.

Here are some other highlights:
• Rockabilly piano-player Rev. Billy C. Wirtz reports on the enduring popularity of Carolina Beach Music.
• Novelist Sharyn McCrumb explores the murder mystery behind the popular folk song, “Tom Dooley.”
• Journalist Frye Gaillard profiles old-time musician Arthur Smith, who fought Hollywood moviemakers for ownership of his song, “Duelin’ Banjos” – and won.

“Making Notes is a rollicking road trip through the music of the Carolinas, an amazing collection of memories from people who lived the music life and still remember it like it was only yesterday. It’s a compilation of memories about music – but universal in its appeal,” praises former Rolling Stone publisher Terry Hummel.

These musicians are scheduled to appear:
Steve Stoeckel, a writer, musician, electronics technician, and amateur tango instructor who’s best known for his work with N.C. band The Spongetones.
Rev. Billy C. Wirtz, a humorist, musician, columnist, and host of a syndicated radio show, “The Reverend Billy's Rhythm Revival.”
The Local Tomatoes, a group of Charlotte Folk Society members who meet every Saturday morning to play “old-time” music at the Mecklenburg County Market.

These readers are scheduled to appear:
John Grooms, an award-winning journalist, freelance editor, and writer who saw James Brown perform in Charlotte in the early 1960s.
Sheila Saints, an award-winning broadcast journalist who has worked in the Carolina newsrooms of NBC News Nightside, WBTV, WFAE and FOX Charlotte.
Tommy Tomlinson, a Charlotte Observer columnist and a 2005 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in commentary.

From his bio: Mac is one of the last surviving members of the Muddy Water’s era and played bass for Muddy's band for years helping shape the electric blues sound that inspired the rock and roll movement of the late 60's and early 70's. Regular guests of the band included Eric Clapton, Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop.The Muddy Waters Band (as a unit) shared the stage with the likes of Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, Junior Wells, Big Joe Williams, and Big Mama Thornton ("Hound Dog") just to name a few. During this time, Mac played on John Lee Hooker's "live" album, Live at the Café Au Go-Go, as well as Otis Spann's classic recording The Blues Is Where It's At, which is still rated a five star CD today.

After more than a year with Muddy Waters, Mac formed The Soul Invaders which backed up many artists, including The Temptations and B. B. King. In the early 70's, he moved to Los Angeles to work at ABC Television and Laff Records (Red Foxx). This led to working on the set of Soul Train from 1971 to 1975 and then working with Bill Withers ("Lean on Me" ) before moving back to South Carolina in the 80's.
