100th Commemoration of Armistice and Veterans Day Show plus fundraiser music on Blues Moon Radio

11/11/18 - Armistice Day in WWI - American Doughboys

Blues Moon Radio pays tribute to Veterans on the auspicious occasion of the 100th commemoration of Armistice Day. Special tribute to my grandfather, who was the recipient of one of only 50 Distinguished Service Medals awarded to members of the Tank Corps in its 100+ year history - he served heroically under Lt. Col. George S. Patton, who was a recipient of the DSC as well.

Of course, we pay tribute on Veterans Day to all who ever served in the US Military, and our allies.

Later we'll take care of some station business and do fundraising, while I lull you into opening your hearts and pocketbooks by playing songs with a money theme.

One of our greatest DJs, and foremost fundraiser - Uncle Gram - passed away this summer so I would like anyone donating on behalf of my show to donate in memory of Uncle Gram. Thank you... our secure donation page is wusc.sc.edu, then click donate. Scurry to the donor wall and enter the dedication, and your name (so we can thank you) before you go. Thank you in advance for any fiscal support!

Our playlist will include:

Enjoy the show... we will NEVER FORGET... salute!

Wishing you peace, health, happiness and always HOPE,
Clair DeLune and Sonny Boy Red Jackson

Tune in each TuesdayBluesday from 6-8 p.m. ET/USA (-5 GMT)... www.wusc.sc.edu, then click listen. Sonny Boy Jackson and I will spin you something special~!

WUSC-FM puts the FUN into Fundraisers - Money Honey playlist

Welcome to Blues Moon Radio!

For the next month or so, WUSC is in its semi-annual fundraiser. As an educational radio station we are challenged with raising a percentage of our funding each year, and we rely on listener support. So, let's get the money rolling and - while we are at it - let's have some fun! And we'll get you some nice surprises for your much-needed support.

The station goal is to raise $7K in the next month, and Blues Moon Radio would like to make a thousand of that happen. If everyone on my friends list on FB donated "four bits" that would do it. But not everyone can give, so some - who can give more freely - will be HEROIC!

As an extra-special way to thank y'all for your support, in addition to the giveaways the station offers, I am offering a fine art poster of "A Carolina Bluesman," painted by Barbara Howell to the top five donors (donation of $50 or more to qualify) who notate Blues Moon Radio as their reason for donation to WUSC.

Here is a (copyright watermarked image; yours will not have the marking) photo of the artwork I'm offering top donors:

I will also continue to offer you the fine programming you have come to expect - deep reaches into the dusty archives from yesteryear for amazing, yet obscure artists; in addition to the kings and queens of Blues; and every so often, contemporary artists who just knock off my Blues Suede Shoes.

If everyone on my list could give a dollar for every year I've been on the air, I would not have to ask again in the spring ... let's knock the cover off this ball and smack a homer right out of the Blues Ball Park, y'all...

You can give any of the following ways:

Pledge over the phone (during my show - Tuesdays 6-8 p.m. ET/USA by calling 803-576-WUSC or 9872)

Mail in a check made out to WUSC-FM (be sure you note Blues Moon Radio as a favorite, please!)
 Send to:
 WUSC
 RHUU Rm 343
1400 Greene St.
Columbia, SC 29208

Use the secure online crowdfunding page:   https://crowdfunding.giving.sc.edu/project/3066
I'm told that you can (and please do) note your favorite show... Blues Moon Radio would appreciate your vote of confidence - thank you!

My very special shows for this week and next will include these money-themed songs, and if we raise enough moolah in time, some Halloween amusements and amazements!

Playlists for the FUN FUNDraiser:

Thank you all, as always, just for listening - I especially appreciate those who follow me on Facebook and Twitter... (Blues Moon Radio on FB, and https://twitter.com/BluesMoonRadio for my much less used Twitter account, but hey... jump on, you never know when the joint will start hoppin').
Special thanks for those who put their money where their ears are. We are volunteer community and student DJs who spend time and energy and our own resources bringing you the best in music - and we don't ask much in return except you let us know you like us and - when you can - you help us keep our equipment updated through your donations. Much light, love and gratitude!

And please support our underwriters, who help bring great music to the Midlands and beyond.

Clair DeLune and RockyDawg, Blues Defender

As always we thank our underwriters, who help bring great music to the Midlands, because we could not imagine our show without their input and support:  Papa Jazz Record Shoppe; California Republic Stand Up Paddleboards in Leesville near Lake Murray (closed for the season); and Word of Mouth Productions. You can link to these orgs by clicking on the visuals...

Blues Moon Radio playlist for Nov. 8, 2010

Tonight's show is a bit of a mix of observances...

We'll commemorate the passing of William Clarke, who has been gone for 14 years. His music affected many who are still moved by his playing and influences. Thanks to Alligator Records' Bruce Iglauer, whose posting on Facebook allowed fellow musicians, friends, fans and music lovers to post their feelings about Clarke and his impact on our lives.

We'll commiserate about the passing of an iconic brand of automobile, as GM shepherded the last Pontiac off the production line. Omar and the Howler's "Big Chief Pontiac" will underscore the impact of the line of cars that featured as its logo the elongated head of a proud native Pontiac tribe chief, which was used as a hood ornament for many years. Pontiac also manufactured one of the nation's most popular muscle cars, the Firebird. The demise of Pontiac auto division is as sad as it is unbelievable for those of us who are car fanatics and Americana collectors.

We'll also try to do some good in this world... The Blues Moon Radio Show is proud to help support the Family Shelter benefit. The event is this Thursday night (11/11) in Columbia at 6-ish (cue my Father's disdain about "ish" as a time frame, but more about this in a moment) at the "Hall at Senate's End" ... Blues, Beer and BBQ - details and links on poster.

Thanks to everyone who donated to the Blues Moon and WUSC-FM during our Fundraiser last week. We appreciate our listeners and fans and rely on community support to keep airing the great music we work hard to bring your way. Donations are still being accepted and may be mailed to the station ... WUSC-FM, RHUU Rm 343, 1400 Greene St., Columbia, SC 29208 - please be sure to specify that you are supporting the Blues Moon Radio Show and any other WUSC shows you enjoy. If you use the online donation page, please be sure to write in WUSC-FM & Blues Moon Radio on the empty radio button box so the money goes where you intend it to. Donations are tax-deductible and a receipt will be mailed.

RockyDawg seeking solace from BigBunny
after hearing his Mommy's operatic attempts.
On another funny note, RockyDawg apparently has broader musical taste than we previously imagined. I was listening to an opera singer on the tube today and Rocky hopped on the bed and stared at the TV intently. When it was over, he looked at me earnestly, so I asked him "Do you like opera?" and he got very excited. I sang a bit, and he stared just as intently at me; as happy as he could be. I wasn't too bad if I do say so myself... but then I "hit a clam"... I had missed a high note that lives where no alto has gone before... even an alto with a wide range. Rocky pulled his head back as if I'd hurt him, then looked back at the TV, then back at me, then he suddenly jumped off the bed and ran out of the room. Everyone's a critic!

Very importantly, in observance of Veteran's Day November 11, we'll also pay tribute to, as well as honor and bestow appropriate glory upon, those who have valiantly served our country in the Armed Forces. Longtime listeners might be aware I come from a military family. My Dad passed away two years ago (miss him so much) and was laid to rest on the day after Veteran's Day.

Daddy was funny, but he also had a lightning quick temper that could rarely be predicted. I recall one Thanksgiving we had gone to visit my brother's family. I'd gone out to the stores the day after Turkey Day to catch a few bargains. Dad called to ask when I was going to swing by to pick him up for the trip home and I said I thought that I'd be there around noon-ish. He sandblasted me, barking in his sternest voice, "Clair! We didn't win WWII by invading Normandy at noon-ISH! What TIME will you be HERE?" I answered "12:07, sir!" I swung into the driveway at 12:06:58 just to be sure I was "on target for my ETA." Ish later became a family joke; so much so that I thought about putting ish on his funeral notice, however I restrained myself, even though Daddy and I had often laughed about his particular teaching technique about timeliness.
Despite the mix of tributes, I guess the moral of tonight's show is:
Do pay homage to those who have gone on before you; enjoy the things and people you love while you have them; forgive people for little transgressions - especially if they are trying their best; never underestimate people (or dogs) - there is a lot more going on than you might know about; and do your best to support good causes. You never know when you might need or want what they have to offer and your help might provide the difference that keeps the good going (please don't fall into the trap of relying upon others to do good in your stead).

Thanks for listening to the Blues Moon with Clair DeLune radio show - I hope you enjoy tonight's musical choices... playlist below... I'll endeavor to keep things running on a timely basis and I promise not to hum along with the music. :) Best to you all ... clair (playlist below)

BLUES NEWS in the Carolinas

LIVE BLUES - giving thanks
Thanks to everyone involved in any way with the past two weeks of Blues concerts/festivals in South Carolina... the vast array of opportunities were staggering and we are mindful to thank those who planned, produced, supported, worked at, performed at, and attended these events. I was blown away by the talent and the open, accessible venues.

To name some key people: Geoff Graves and Word of Mouth Productions staff; and Gary Erwin, Danny Riddick and all the Kershaw County Fine Arts people. Of course, this could not happen without the quality of performances from the Blues artists themselves.

Wow.

Gone but not forgotten
Regarding tonight's Blues Moon Radio Show, our hearts go out to family and friends of Solomon Burke, who passed away 10/10/10 in Amsterdam. We'll start tonight's show in tribute to him.

Blues Moon Radio has long been a fan and friend of the late, great Nappy Brown, so we pay tribute to him tonight for several reasons... the beginning of Fall marks the anniversary of his death, his birth and the last performance I saw him make; we sat quietly at a table in Camden prior to his show, as old friends sometimes do... and I miss him still. So we will end with a tribute to Nappy.

James Cotton's new CD - just out - called GIANT, has a tribute to his dear friend and colleague, Koko Taylor. While I was not close with Koko, we did bond one night over an impromptu chat about men and relationships and had stayed in touch intermittently. I cannot imagine how heavy a heart James Cotton must have about the loss of his friend, who was such a powerhouse singer and such an icon for females. She showed us we can make it in a difficult business.

Robin Rogers' fundraiser update
As a reminder about how we can help Blues artists while they are still with us, another powerhouse Blueswoman, Robin Rogers, is struggling with untreatable cancer in Charlotte, N.C. There will be a fund-raiser for her (see the Facebook page: Robin Rogers Benefit Central at: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=156948347666993#!/group.php?gid=132068270172379) later this month in Charlotte, as well as other events across the nation. Her band is unable to play and that leaves both her and her husband Tony, who is in the band, out of work. In addition to having no income, they - like many Blues artists - could not afford health insurance, so the bills are staggering. She is in hospice now with no treatment possibilities. Please help as you can.

I've painted a poster to contribute to the fundraiser, and I hope that after the original is auctioned off in Charlotte, I'll be able to offer prints of it for donors. I urge you to participate fully.

UPDATE FROM THE SITE: AT THIS POINT BASIC LIVING EXPENSES ARE THE MOST PRESSING NEED. ROBIN AND TONY WILL BE OUT OF WORK FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. DONATIONS CAN BE MADE DIRECTLY TO ROBIN AT:

WUSC fundraiser updates and requests: keep Blues on the air!
WUSC is preparing for its fundraiser again this semester (my part will be Chicago Blues on Tuesday, Nov. 2 from 6-9) and I'll be accepting donations to keep the station rolling out the best in Blues to you each Tuesday. I'll be singing for my dj supper, so to speak, and my goal is to raise $1000.00 this semester. I thank our generous donors from past years and hope you'll pledge in advance (if you do, please suggest a Chicago Blues artist or tune you'd like to hear).
Prizes will be announced closer to the event, but among items the station is giving as a thank you to our supporters, I will be giving Blues CDs, and for our top donors I'll provide framed prints of a limited edition run of an original art piece by me (Clair DeLune).

If you work for an organization that matches charitable donations, we have all the certification for that so please let us know. If your group or organization has items suitable for giveaways, please contact me directly.

The fundraiser begins Friday at WUSC, so the Blues Moon with Clair DeLune will hold its fundraiser on-air Tuesday, March 23, 2010 from 6 - 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (USA).

We have some fabulous thank you packages to give away... I'll post a list of the WUSC packages as well as the Blues Moon packages (which are a special bonus for my faithful and fabulous listeners and donors) as soon as the lists are finalized.

There is still some time for artists and promoters to send materials to PO Box 5591 Columbia SC 29250 if you would like to be included. Please include duplicates if you can so the show will be able to promote your artists after the fundraiser.

Thanks to everyone who has so generously participated in the past - this year's promises to be a doozie!

Tune in to the Blues Moon tonight from 6-8 p.m. for more amazing Blues Women!

WUSC FM - http://www.wusc.sc.edu/ for streaming Internet (join in early - streams are limited) and 90.5 FM and HD1 Columbia for our local listeners!

WUSC Fundraiser is 3/16 - how can you help?

PLEASE HELP with the WUSC Fundraiser:

Thanks to everyone who has been so supportive in the past - via donations, pledge pack items, or underwriting for the Blues Moon and WUSC-FM and HD1 Columbia.

I've been tied up with major life issues the past several fundraisers, so am sadly behind my personal quota ("It's the BLUES, folks!). I'd love to have your help getting back up to speed.

WUSC is an non-profit educational organization running a radio station, thus must match funding provided by the university, so please find it in your hearts to help me keep the Blues Moon Radio Show alive for another year... I've set a goal of $2000 dollars and here is how you can help...

Musicians, record labels and promoters: send promo materials (t-shirts, CDs, pins, posters, badges, bumper stickers) to Clair DeLune at PO Box 5591 Columbia SC 29250.

Listeners and fans: please pledge in advance of the show - you can e-mail your pledges to bluesgoddess AT gmail DOT com (use the regular @ and . - I've eliminated them in my blog so 'bots don't get me).  Or you can pledge online at http://www.wusc.sc.edu/ (but please do let me know so I can get you your special Blues Moon extra donor package items). They can take a credit card over their secure server.

We'll set packages up (in addition to whatever the station offers) as follows - because YOU deserve the best!:

Top Donor - special art piece by Clair DeLune

All donors of $100 or more will get a Blues Moon coaster, signed by Clair DeLune

Plus T-shirts, CDs and other materials from recording artists as supplies last.

No amount is too small and all donations are appreciated... those Lincolns add up fast when a lot of you contribute... thanks again to all who have helped in the past. If you can, please do, but if you cannot (these are tough times) take care of yourself first.

And, the best prize is the continued success of WUSC and the Blues Moon... the longest running Blues program in the Carolinas. And please know that you are always a welcome listener, donor or not. I do the show for YOU ALL! Happy to volunteer - in my 20th year!

Thanks!
clair
