What do songs about being in love have to do with a Blues radio show?

The majority of Blues songs are about daily life, with many of those about the trials and tribulations associated with living. They center upon loss of a job or loved one; going to jail, being sick or downtrodden - effectively being on the losing end of life.

But there are many sides to Blues music, and one side involves the celebration of good things. Blues music can help you climb out of the pits of despair, and it can also be on the upbeat, instead of the downbeat.

Take for example, the many songs about falling IN love, rather than being blindsided or waylaid by the loss of it.

Tonight's show is not just about falling in love. It features songs that testify to falling in love with THE one.

I'll bet you have questions... here are a few FAQs on the subject - you can leave more in the comments or at the Blues Moon Radio Facebook page.

  • How do we know what we feel is really true love? That has yet to be established. There are no measures that are absolute, but simultaneously feeling exhilaration and complete exasperation might be a hint.
  • Are we always on target with our estimation of the lasting power of love? Hardly, or the divorce courts wouldn't have backlogs.
  • Is there some money or time-back guarantee? Yes, dear, you just haven't found it yet. Keep looking.
  • Has anyone really stayed in love forever? Yep. There are those who say they have. And others whom you can just tell by the way they look at each other. Watch for those "marital bliss-ers" who show off and make others feel badly by comparison. You don't want to associate with people like that; and to tell the truth, their spouse probably wishes they didn't know their mate either. Give them a wide berth, Bertha!
  • Will my beloved ever put the cap back on the toothpaste tube, dang it? Not a chance in, well... not a chance. Get right with what really matters in a relationship or you will never get there. Buy two tubes of toothpaste - one for each of you to do with as you please - and don't sweat the small stuff.
  • Do you have to be in love to be a completely fulfilled and happy person? Nope. Sometimes it is easier on your own - fewer entanglements to trip over... so you just do what makes you most content and don't ever let anyone else tell you what should make you happy. You are the boss of you.
  • Why would anyone WANT to be in love if it can be such a pain? Much like Mary Mary Quite Contrary, when it is good it is very, very good. It's only when it is bad that it is horrid. Be considerate of the other and treat them better than you want to be treated. A wise man once said there is no 50/50 in a successful relationship - each person has to give 100 percent. Yes, we know that is effectively 50/50 in math terms, but love is not math. [Did you hear that collective sigh of relief, too? A lot of math-phobes must listen to the Blues, eh?]
  • How did you get to be such an expert as to answer such important life questions like these? Well, it's pretty fancy, but I earned a graduate degree in empathic skills counseling and spent 40 years talking to people about life and love and goals... but the real reason I am such a fantastic expert is because I signed up for this blog, which confers instant expert status because I am now "On the Internet, so it must be true!" ...  (read that as: "I am not any more expert in this arcane area than anyone else"... just pondering out loud and making an attempt for my musings to be amusing).
  • So, if you are in it... be in it to win it (with "it" being your enamorata's heart) and if you do win it, take good care of it... it's a full-time responsibility and failure to safeguard it can cause irreparable damage, which not only harms that person who entrusted you with it, but dishonors both of you. Be kind and caring, even if it does not work out well. Here's hoping you succeed in all things!

Hope springs eternal in the human heart, and Blues musicians are some of the most human among us. Tonight we focus on their songs about finding, declaring and staying together with "The One."

Hope you enjoy it - either with someone you love, or by celebrating the fabulousness that is JUST YOU!

Musical Hugs,
Clair DeLune and RockyDawg (Blues Defender)
